EMERGENCY COMMUNITY SUPPORT FUND (ECSF) Phase 2 ANNOUNCEMENT
The Carman Area Foundation is re-activating the Emergency Community Support Fund alongside Community Foundations of Canada
The COVID-19 pandemic has been an unpredictable and challenging time for many, with some communities experiencing higher levels of vulnerability than others. Marginalized groups, youth, children and the elderly, essential workers, and newcomers are just some of the communities that have faced increased challenges. To provide emergency relief, the Government of Canada launched the Emergency Community Support Fund (ECSF) to help support communities made increasingly vulnerable by the pandemic.
With COVID-19 cases increasing in many communities, and a continuous call for emergency relief, the ECSF will reopen with a second round of funding, providing much-needed assistance to charities and non-profit organizations serving communities experiencing vulnerability. The Government of Canada is flowing this funding through Community Foundations of Canada, United Way Centraide Canada and the Canadian Red Cross. We are proud to be working with CFC and the Government of Canada to deliver funding locally in the Carman, Dufferin, Grey, Roland and Sperling region to ensure that our citizens are safe and healthy. Through the ECSF, we will be investing $30,000 towards local charities and qualified donees supporting people experiencing heightened vulnerability. Organizations can apply starting on October 5, 2020.
Please refer to our ECSF page or the Community Foundations of Canada website for more details.

Carman Area Foundation awards $40,000 in grants through the Emergency Community Support Fund
Carman, MB June 26, 2020 – The Carman Area Foundation has awarded $40,000 in grants to four local organizations – Boyne Regional Library, Carman Farmers’ Market, Wee Care Child Centre, and Carman Wellness Connections – Addressing Poverty to address local needs related to COVID-19 challenges. The grants announced today are part of the Emergency Community Support Fund (ECSF), funded by the Government of Canada.
The ECSF is a $350 million fund that is being implemented with Community Foundations of Canada, the Canadian Red Cross, and United Way Centraide Canada, in partnership with local foundations across the country. Its goal is to provide support to charities and non-profit organizations serving vulnerable Canadians.
Barry Gosnell, CAF Chair, shared that the Foundation was very pleased to be able to facilitate access to the federal funds by local groups. “The COVID-19 pandemic has created many challenges for all residents and these four organizations developed plans to help the more affected and vulnerable groups, including youth, seniors and many families. We are so glad that their projects were approved for funding”.
Carman Farmers’ Market Co-ordinator Joyce Nicolajsen, was thrilled to be able to access the emergency funds this year. “We moved the market to a new location this year, and the COVID distancing requirements brought extra challenges and costs that we would not have been able to absorb without the ESCD funds. The market provides an important local resource to our residents and we are so happy to ensure its availability for everyone.”
Earlier this year, The Carman Area Foundation, issued over $90,000 in its annual granting process. Thanks to partnerships with the Carman Collegiate Youth in Philanthropy program ($4500), the Manitoba Build 150 program ($20,000), and the federal Emergency Community Support Fund ($40,000), over $160,000 in grants has been disbursed in 2020 to local organizations in 2020.
Currently there are no more ECSF funds available for local applications. For a full list of grants awarded through Community Foundations of Canada’s network, visit the CFC website.

Announcing A New Endowment Fund
The D.R. McClement Memorial Fund
Gwen McClement and Rob McClement signing Agreement, with Janine Lodder, Vice Chair, and Barry Gosnell, Chair
We are very pleased to announce a new ‘donor advised’ Endowment Fund within the Carman Area Foundation – The D. R. McClement Memorial Fund.
The Fund, established by Gwen McClement and family in memory of their husband, father and grandfather Denis McClement, will provide a bursary each year to a graduating Carman Collegiate student.
In respect of Denis’s high regard for education, the family was looking for an effective and long-term approach to help young people pursue post-secondary education. They decided that an endowment fund would be the best mechanism to allow them to do this.
The bursary recipient will be determined each year in the school’s Awards’ process. The recipient will be a student planning to enter an Agricultural (or related) program at an accredited University or College.
A strength of creating a ‘donor advised’ Fund, is that the family will have the opportunity to help the community in other ways. As the Endowment Fund grows, any annual disbursement greater than the bursary amount will be granted to community initiatives as decided by the McClement family.
The Foundation thanks Mrs. McClement and family for their foresight, generosity and support of the community.

New ‘Donor Advised’ Endowment Fund

The Carman Area Foundation is excited to announce that a new endowment fund has been established. The new Fund, the Dane Nicolajsen Fund, has been established by Jeff and Joyce Nicolajsen and family of Sperling, in memory of their son and brother Dane. This fund was created as a donor advised fund, a type of endowment fund that allows the donor to determine how the annual grants from the fund are allocated.
The family was looking for a way to support the community on a long term basis in Dane’s memory and felt a ‘donor advised’ endowment fund seemed to fit the bill. They liked the option of participation in the granting process; they have a say in what applications they think Dane would have supported. The Fund has been designed to support youth and youth related projects, within the area that the Foundation serves. This Fund is the second major donor advised fund of the Foundation, the other being the Linear Grain Fund.
A spokesperson for the family stated: “We are excited to see more and more people recognizing donor advised funds as a possibility. It opens doors of communication between fund donors and the CAF Board. Dane’s family was looking for a way to have his memory remembered for years to come and this donor advised fund seemed to fit the bill. They liked the option of participation in the granting process; they have a say in what applications they think Dane would have supported.”
The CAF grants annually to charitable organizations throughout the community. Please see our list of established funds.
